Booking a white water rafting adventure during your time spent in Jackson Hole is definitely an experience you won’t want to miss.

There are good times and memories made amongst couples, friends, families, and co-workers out on that water. What you don’t want, however, is to lose out on all the fun because you weren’t prepared for the rafting adventure.

In this article we will review what to wear and what to bring with you so that you are ready to go.

What To Wear for White Water Rafting Adventures

The clothing and shoes you wear can directly impact the quality of your adventure. Below we have provided you with an idea of the appropriate attire and shoes that will give you the best chance of having a good time on the raft.

Should you still have questions, it is always a good idea to call ahead and ask.

Clothing

When it comes to the clothing you wear during a white water rafting adventure, you want to make sure it will dry fast since you are going to get wet. And since it could be quite a while before you are able to change depending on the adventure you chose, the last thing you are going to want to deal with is heavy water-logged clothing.

A few things to consider wearing include:

  • Wet suits
  • Bathing suits or swim trunks/shorts
  • Light, fast-drying t-shirt and shorts

Avoid wearing jeans and clothes made of thick materials.

Shoes

Again, you are going to get wet. What’s more, the rapids can get rough and things that are not secure within the raft can easily go flying. For this reason, flip flops, crocs, strapless sandals, slides, and the like are highly discouraged.

Sneakers and boots are also not recommended. These are both made with materials that can get heavy and soggy when wet and they do not dry quickly. This can make them very uncomfortable. And since boots are already heavy, wearing them while rafting is just a bad idea.

Not wearing any shoes at all is also not recommended.

So, what shoes should you wear for white water rafting?

Sandals with velcro straps, such as certain brands of river shoes are highly effective. They will remain securely on your feet for the duration of the adventure.

Neoprene or wetsuit booties that slip on are always a great idea as they dry fast and still allow you to walk on surfaces like gravel without hurting your feet. Most importantly, they aren’t going anywhere.

You need light shoes that are fast-drying, secure, and offer you non-slip soles on wet surfaces. As an absolute last resort, wear sneakers.

What Should You Bring White Water Rafting?

In addition to the clothes you are wearing, many adventure-seekers wonder what they should or shouldn’t bring with them, if anything. Here’s the lowdown.

  • Helmets may or may not be worn, so bring a hat to protect your head and shade your face from the sun.
  • A hair tie to keep long hair pulled back.
  • Bring waterproof sunscreen with you to apply before and after rafting.
  • Sunglasses are always a good idea to protect your eyes.

The river rapids can be rough and things do fly out of the boat — even if you are wearing them. So don’t bring your favorite lucky hat or your best pair of sunglasses as you may just lose them to the river.
